Macarella, Mitjana and Binigausalet

Sant Lluis – Binibeca, Cala Torret, Caló Blanc, Binisafua and Biniparraitx Canutells / Binidali Beach – majestic cliffs Son Bou – the longest beach on the island, Cala´n Porter and Binigaus Beach Cala Escorxada and Cala Fustam – the most inaccessible in the south Cala Trebaluger, Mitjana and Mitjaneta – oases between cliffs and pine forests Macarella and Macarelleta – the pearls of the south

This is a spectacular crossing but really expensive, really from Mahon we advise to sail more than twelve miles and this excursion double that distance, the best option is to make a departure from the area of Ciutadella to visit the beaches further away, it takes less time and is much more economical, we are looking for boats in the area to complement our services in the area.

The most accessible option after visiting Alcaufar, Punta Prima and Binibeca, is to continue sailing south to Biniparratx and Binidali, continuing to Es Canutells and already in the municipality of Alayor visit the beach of Cala’n Porter and see the Cova d’en Xuroy from the sea.
For the brave, the crossing would continue along the beach of Son Bou and Santo Tomás, including the area known as Binigaus and then the beautiful beaches of Cala Escorxada and Cala Fustam, ending at the beach of Trebaluger.

Once launched into the adventure we are practically a stone’s throw from Cala Mitjana with its magnificent cliffs, Cala Galdana and Macarella, we could continue in that environment and discover other places like Es Talaier, but it is really impossible to discover all its corners in such a short time, it is much better to spend a day in the south east of the island and another day in the south west, enjoying even more of all its beauty

Departure from Mahón

  • Data: south coast
  • Distance: 6 miles
  • Navigation: 30 mins by motor

Beaches of Sant Lluis
Most of the area is urbanized with very particular architectural characteristics, white houses, rough walls and complexes such as the village of Binibeca Vell that despite looking like a fishing village is actually a project of the late 60’s by a visionary Italian architect.
The first ones we found, Biniancolla and En Caragol until arriving to Cala Torret and Binibeca with its village, second residences, habitual houses and even that it seems incredible, second residences of islanders that during the winter live to little more than 4km, it is curious as for the outsiders the distances are perceived of so different form, for a foreigner 20km is a walk, for an islander it is equivalent to half an island!
Next the last beaches of the municipality, Binisafua and Ses Olles, this last one is not a beach, it is a corner with platforms and cliffs in which it is not allowed to sail, with sand bottom, crystalline waters and an enormous quantity of fish, it is like swimming directly in a fish tank, near there the minuscule Caló Blanc and last Biniparraitx, only virgin beach that remains in the municipality.

The great unknown south coast of Mahón
It is something usual to forget that in the south coast of the island there is an area belonging to the municipality of Mahón, there are two beautiful coves, one the urbanization of Canutells with a beach area next to the mouth of a torrent, fishermen’s houses and modern buildings hanging on the cliff.
A short distance from there following the cliffs of the coast we found a devilish staircase that goes from the sea to the top of the cliff, does not seem to lead anywhere and gives real vertigo to see it, if I tell you the truth down it is much more fun than up it.
Finally Binidali beach, fortunately all the buildings in the area are on the cliff and to access them you have to walk a few minutes, on it an unbuilt street that provides a spectacular viewpoint of the south of the island, we recommend the sunset from the top and visit the small bar of the place, authentic “photocall” of the island.

Llucalari, Son Bou, Santo Tomás and Atalis
The southern area in its most exposed and open to the sea as well as some small coves as Cales Coves with its small house “Solita” on the cliff, a spectacular corner protected by cliffs with ancient prehistoric caves, near there, the largest and most famous cave, the “Cova d’en Xoroy”, impressive disco located in the interior, impressive to see it from the sea with its terraces on the cliff from where you get to it, worth enjoying a night out and unrepeatable place.
The beach of Cala’n Porter, protected by the cliff, has a large area of sand and a great gastronomic offer.
Once over the cliff we arrive at the extensive and open beach of Son Bou, an area full of houses overlooking the sea taking advantage of the gentle slope of the land, after several kilometers of sandy area we find the area of Atalis, Tomas and finally Binigaus, beautiful sandy bottoms where you can rest after the crossing.

Ok, I have to confess that an important reason to have a boat is not to take the walks that my wife likes, she loves these two beaches, it is true that they are beautiful but they are very far away by walking from the nearest civilized area, a very good option to get to this wonderful area of the island is to arrive by sea. walking from the nearest civilized area, a very good option to reach this wonderful area of the island is to arrive by sea, the truth is that both Cala Escorxada and Cala Fustam are well worth the effort, white sand beaches and crystalline bottoms, with an original cave in the second one where you can hide and enjoy a semi-submerged beach covered by a secret cave worthy of hiding a pirate treasure.

We arrived at the corner with more beaches and more spectacular of the earth and part of the universe, it is true that the locals love our island and we tend to be little objective, but really all the beaches in this area are wonderful, after the previous two and thinking that it can not be overcome we find Cala Trebaluger, Mitjana and Mitjaneta, sure that the sandy beaches surrounded by pine trees, white cliffs that protect the beaches from where people jump into the sea and secret corners of the area will seem to us “the host”, and if they tell you that after Cala Galdana that not for being urbanized ceases to be spectacular, you will be more than satisfied and thinking that nothing can beat it!..
Sincerely a mistake, there are many more spectacular areas that will leave you amazed, finally and as an end of the trip two of them.

We finish our trip in the south with the spectacular Cala Galdana, it really is a beautiful sandy area with the mouth of a torrent, lush forests and a magnificent beach surrounded by life, tourists who visit us and a wide range of leisure, in the end tourism is the source of our existence, which gives us value, because there is no point living in a place like our island if you can not boast of it and share it with others, they say that the island is saturated and it is true, saturated with life, beauty and wonderful people.
To end our trip nothing better than visiting Macarella and Macarelleta, the pearls of the south, magical places that my wife would say, a huge turquoise that hypnotizes you and you would never want to leave, that’s why we love our island and we hope you take a good memory of your visit.

End of route
Our trip is over but I invite you to visit other areas that we do not plan to reach as Cala Pilar, Algaiarens, Cala Morell, the lighthouse of Punta Nati and the spectacular Pont d’en Gil in the north or the coast of Ciutadella with southern beaches such as the sandy bottoms of Cala Parejals, Son Saura, Es Talaier and Cala’n Turqueta, and who dares, the return to the island.
And finally thank you for joining us on this journey. Thank you and see you again!
